Adventure Training

Adventure Training is one of the most exciting and varied activities you can undertake as a member of the Air Training Corps. As a member of the ATC you will have the opportunity to attend one of the Adventure Training Centres at either Llanbedr in Wales or Windemere in the Lake District. Here you will have the opportunity to take part in some of the following:

Canoeing
Kayaking
Hillwalking
Climbing
and even work on completing your expedition section of your DofE

to name but a few..........

But before you are 'let loose' on your own you will be given training and knowledge from qualified instructors to ensure your adventure is as safe possible. This starts in the classroom and covers the basics of learning how to read a map including how to find north, what different symbols on a map mean and also how to find yourself on a map.

As well as learning how to map read you will also be given 'pearls of wisdom' with regards to the equipment needed to undertake Adventure Training. This includes places where you will receive a discount for being a member of the Air Training Corps. Most Squadrons also have a store of their own Adventure Training equipment which is available for loan should you not be able to acquire this yourself.

Perhaps one of the most practical subjects you will learn as a cadet it can be the most fun. As part of your learning you will learn how to cook food on a stove (maybe even do 'Ready Steady Cook' too), learn how to pitch a tent and also cover more serious subjects such as ensuring the party are safe and keeping an eye out for potential illness in the party.

Once you have been taught basic skills in the classroom you will be give the opportunity to take part in many great activities such as Rock Climbing at some local crags or at an indoor climbing wall. Perhaps go canoeing or kayaking at a local boating lake or even practice for your expeditions by attending a weekend camp with other cadets or going walking with members of your Squadron staff to improve your navigation skills.
