Fieldcraft

If you are interested in getting your hands dirty then the Air Training Corps offers cadets the opportunity to take part in fieldcraft activities. Different in the approach than Adventure Training, fieldcraft does still train you how to be self sufficient in the outdoors.

Fieldcraft is about living and moving in the field.  Squadrons organize many varied activities and exercises which can have many different objectives such as to rescue a downed pilot or having two teams working against each other to make something. Different exercises need different qualities.  Like some need stealth and the ability to move quietly.  Others need speed and agility but all need a good sense of teamwork.

One popular exercise undertaken by cadets is to locate a downed satellite or undertake casualty evacuation. By providing training during the day from qualified and competent instructors the cadets have the opportunity to do these under the cover of darkness.

Clothing

The clothing used for fieldcraft differs from Adventure Training in that you wear ‘Cammo Gear’ or what is known as Disruptive Patternfieldcraft uniform Material (DPM) clothing. This is the kind of clothing that the Army wears but at the minute is not issued to cadets unlike ‘Blue’ uniform. Don’t worry about buying this as most Squadron’s have a supply you can borrow for fieldcraft.

As well as clothing you will also use camouflage cream to disguise your face. This is usually made up of green and brown colour’s and allows you break up the shape of your face to look more like vegetation (if you don’t put too much on).

Many cadets proceed to buy their own uniform and equipment which makes it easier to take part in the exercises but there is no commitment to do this.

Junior Leaders & Frimley Park

If you wish to progress further and enhance not only your fieldcraft but your leadership, people management and planning skills there is the opportunity to apply for leadership courses at Frimley Park and the Junior Leaders course which cover in depth the above skills which will be useful both in military and civillian life.

Finally, fieldcraft is there to allow you to take part in fun hands on activities but also to allow you to learn to work as a team and develop your leadership skills too.
