Hovercraft Training

One of the unique opportunities you will have as a cadet at 148 Squadron is you will have the chance to fly the Squadron hovercraft. However before we let you loose you will need training on how to work with and handle the hovercraft safely.

Ground Training

Firstly you will cover how to operate around the hovercraft including all the work that is required to get the hovercraft ready to fly such ashovercraft groundcrew ensuring that the Hovercraft skirts and engine are in good working order. You will also be taught how to conrol the hovercraft whilst it is stationary to change passengers and ensure the area in use is safe for cadets, staff and general public alike.

If you are interested in mechanics you will also be given the opportunity to learn about the hovercraft’s engine and propulsion system including how to ensure the engine and fuel does not become contaminated by grass from the flying area which will help you when learning about subjects such as Principles of Flight and Propulsion.

Learning to Fly

Once it is time for your first flight you will be briefed by your pilot on what you’ll be doing for your first flight and what to do whilst on it. hovercraft flyingChances are all you will remember from your first flight is how fast it was and how quick it was over.At this point you will continue for a few flights as a back-seat passenger learning how to use your weight to steer the hovercraft.

Once you have mastered this you will then take the front seat and have control of the hovercraft speed and direction with an instructor on the back to ensure you are comfortable with control. After several flights in control you will be assessed by the instruction team as to whether you are suitable to fly solo. Your first solo flight will be as exciting for you as your first ever flight in the Hovercraft but you will be closely monitored to ensure you are safe.

Piloting at Gala’s

Probably one of the most exciting aspects of flying the hovercraft is the opportunity to fly at local gala’s and public events. This gives you the chance to show the local community what we do and is a great recruitment tool for the Squadron. Gala's usually provide you with the additional challenge of flying display circuits or operating in smaller areas which will mean your skills as a Hovercraft pilot are always being tested and improved.
