148 (Barnsley) Air Training Corps

What did you do last weekend?

Did you learn to fly an airplane, go solo in a glider or join your friends on an expedition in some of the most exciting scenery you have ever seen? Unless you are already an Air Cadet the chances are that the answer to the question is not one of the above.

If you are aged 13 to 16 years 9 months old and the thought of doing some or all of the above sounds exciting to you why not join the Air Training Corps? As well as learning how aircraft fly and why they stay in the air you will actually be able to visit RAF stations, fly in aircraft and even take control yourself.

If the great outdoors is more your thing there is the opportunity to take part in Adventure Training and Fieldcraft where you will learn the skills to enable you to live safely in the outdoors for a period of time. As a cadet you will be given the opportunity to attend camps on RAF stations and Army camps where you get to experience what it is like to actually be in the Armed Forces.

148 (Barnsley) Squadron also has it's own two-man hovercraft that has been built and now flown by the cadet of the Squadron. Used both as a recruitment tool and also as a training aid for displays the hovercraft is great fun but safe due to the in-depth risk assessments that are in place for when the hovercraft is flown.

Whilst linked to the Royal Air Force the Air Training Corps is not a recruitment tool and any cadet who joins the ATC is not expected to join the RAF even though many ex-cadet have gone on to join the Armed Services. Ex-cadets have gone on to become Pilots on fast jets and helicopters, marines and communications specialists to name but a few.

The ATC not only provides you with the opportunity for adventure but also gives you the skills for later life including qualifications and life skills. If you are interested in finding out more about what we have to offer why not browse these pages or contact the Squadron for more information.
