South Yorkshire Police Visit

As part of the training programme on Squadron a visit to the Armed Response unit at nearby Manvers was arranged for cadets. The purpose of the visit was to give ourselves an insight into what is involved in being a Police Officer as well as to talk about the dangers of guns and knives.

When we arrived there we were greeted by ex Barnsley cadet John Cobb who helped arrange the copsequip trip and he took us through different equipment that the Armed Repsonse units use and Cpl Lacey was given the opportunity to try some of it on. As well as showing us the equipment they use he also took us through how the Police operate including how they support the other emergency services and how specialist units such as dog handlers and air support units are used.

After a short break we were given the opportunity to look at more of the tools that the Police use to handle situations. As part of this section we were show what type of equipment is used and when. We were then show a training exercise used to train Police dogs how to work in different situations and how different procedures are used for different situations when using Police Dogs.

However the highlight of the visit for me was the surprise fly-over of the South Yorkshire Police Helecopter. I have seen it flying over Barnsley many times (especially over football matches) but it was another thing to see it closer up. I only wish we had chance to look at the equipment on board.

Sadly 9pm came around all too quickly and we had to return to the Squadron. After hearing stories from staff at the Squadron around when they used to assist the Police with their riot-training exercises I was pleased to be given the opportunity to see some of the work that the teams from South Yorkshire undertake.

I would like to thank the staff of South Yorkshire Police (and especially John Cobb) for giving us the opportunity to visit them to see what work they undertake and hope that another visit is able to be arranged soon for the cadets who didn't get the change to attend.
