Cadets Set Sail On Fort Victoria
RFA Fort Victoria Camp – activities ashore
Although we were billeted onboard Fort Victoria, we also spent some of our time ashore, taking part in various activities such as expedition training and a trip to RAF Odiham.
Expedition Training

On one of the days a group of 12 of us went to a park to do some orienteering and map reading, the goal was to walk around the woods and find ten markers, each with a letter that we had to write down. We were in three groups, all containing a mix of air and sea/marine cadets. My group were the last to set off but the second to finish. We did however have a minor set back when we lost one of our team but we quickly found him again. The day was very enjoyable and I personally feel that I have improved my knowledge of map reading and also I feel more confident working as part of a team.
RAF Odiham
The day we visited RAF Odiham was very enjoyable. We were shown around the various parts of the base such as the hangers, fire station and the armoury. When we went into the hanger we were allowed to board a Chinook HC 2. This was the best part of my day, we were shown how the helicopter works and the various defence systems and then we were allowed into the cockpit to have a look at all of the instruments. After viewing the helicopters we went into the fire station and we looked at the fire engines. One very large for aircraft and a smaller one for domestic fires. We looked as all of the fire fighting equipment and also climbed around in the fire engines.

The best part of the fire station tour was when the staff demonstrated how to use a fire extinguisher on a real fire and then let us have a go ourselves putting out the fires. The last part of this day was spent in the armoury. We were told about different firearms and how they work. We then got the chance to hold them and take a closer look at them. My favourites were the M60 and the M135D minigun.Overall these two excursions were some of the best activities of the week in my opinion and I’m sure other cadets enjoyed them as much as I did.
