Cadet's Stand Proud at Annual Open Night

Once again the cadets of 148 (Barnsley) Squadron did themselves proud at the annual Open Evening. The event was attended by family and friends of the cadets along with various dignitaries and ex-cadets of the Air Training Corps. The guest of honour for the evening was the Rt Honorable Mayor of Barnsley.

Cadet's On ParadeAfter a week of cleaning and shining the Squadron it was ready to be set up to show visiting guests what king of activities the cadets undertake. Displays included a display on Adventure Training and one on First Aid. As usual the Project Room was set up to show people the Squadron Hovercraft and what is involved in maintenance and flight.

On Friday evening the cadet's arrived looking smart in their best blue uniform and formed up close to the Squadron whilst waiting for the Mayor to arrive. Once the Mayor was escorted into the Squadron the cadets marched smartly onto the Parade Square and were prepared for Inspection.

Once ready the Mayor was invited to inspect the Squadron and talk to some of the cadet's to find out why they enjoyed being a member of 148 (Barnsley) Squadron. After speaking to the cadet's the Mayor then presented the awards which the cadets had worked hard to achieve over the past 12 months. These included certificates for training as well as awards for extra-curricular awards such as First Aid and Gliding Scholarships.

Once the presentations and speeches had been completed the parade was marched off to rounds of applause from visiting guests, dignitaries, friends and family.

The cadets who won the annual awards are:Award Winners

Cdt F/Sgt R. Arnott - Best Overall Cadet
Cdt Sgt E. Dawson - NCO of the Year
Cdt Sgt E. Dawson - Shooting Trophy
Cdt R. Wyatt - Best Young Male Cadet
Cdt A. Walker - Best Young Female Cadet
Cdt A. Oates - Smartest Cadet
Cdt B. Barnes-Martin - Sporting Cadet

Once the formalities were complete the cadets then had the opportunity to show parents around the Squadron and also take part in any events or games going on such as the Parachute Pull and Whiskey Toss. As always a raffle was held which proved popular. At the end of the evening the Mayor was asked to dismiss the Squadron.
