Classifications

As an Air Cadet you will progress through adcademic training to support the practical activities available as a member of the Air Cadet Organisation. To show at what level of training you are at you will wear a classifiaction badge on you uniform. Below is detailed information on what each level entails:

First Class Cadet

first class cadetThis is your first stage of training where you will learn all about the history of the Air Training Corps and the Royal Air Force. You will also be given the basics of what to do when going out doing Adventure Training. This level of training is in small modules and basic as you are new to the organisation. Don't worry about passing examinations at this level as your instructor will monitor your progress and discuss with the Squadron Training Officer when you have met the criteria to pass your First Class Cadet.

Leading Cadet

Leading Cadet BadgeThis level of training is where you will begin to learn more about specialist subjects. You will learn how aircraft fly and why heavy things like jumbo-jets stay in the air. You will also expand on what you learnt at 'First Class' in Map Reading which will enhance your navigational skills ready for your Duke of Edinburgh. Due to these subjects being a little more specialised that what you have already learned you will sit a multiple choice exam which your instructor will ensure you are ready for.

Senior Cadet

Senior Cadet BadgeThe third level of your training will again be more complex than you learned at previous levels. The instructors at this stage will teach you two subjects such as how aircraft engines work including different types of jet engines or how to navigate in the air and produce flight plans. Again at this level you will be required to sit a multiple choice exam to pass.

Staff Cadet

Staff Cadet BadgeBy this stage in your learnings as a cadet you will most likely be a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) and after taking two more examinations of the same complexity as Senior Cadet you will concentrate on learning the skills required to teach other cadets. To pass your Staff Cadet examination you will sit an examination which involves a presentation and questioning by a member of staff to ensure you understand how the higher levels of the ATC and RAF work. Once you have passed this you will be awarded a yellow lanyard which you wear to show you have completed all your examinations as a cadet and are now capable of teaching other cadets if required.
