First Aid Training - Heartstart

Heartstart is an Emergency Life Support course from the British Heart Foundation that South Yorkshire Wing Air Training Corp has affiliated itself to as part of their initial training programme. All cadets within the wing will complete the course and receive an attendance certificate upon completion.

The course is a one day course which covers the following:heartstart

Recovery Position
Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Choking
Suspected Heart Attack
Control Of Bleeding

“Over 1.4 million people have been trained through the Heartstart UK initiative”.
(British Heart Foundation 2007, www.bhf.org.uk )

“The most important factor determining survival after a cardiac arrest is the time from collapse of the casualty to defibrillation - performing CPR buys time and more than doubles the chances of survival.”
(British Heart Foundation 2007, www.bhf.org.uk )

148 Barnsley Squadron is committed to this package. An example of this is that within a week of the Heartstart package being rolled out a team from the squadron completed the course and came fourth in the wing field day first aid competition.

Cadets then have the option of undertaking the St John Ambulance Young Lifesaver Plus Award Scheme which is again run through the Corp. This is a more in depth fully certificated course to build on the initial training given through Heartstart.
All certificates gained are useful for any future portfolio building.
